Parish Pastoral Councils were
born out of the Second Vatican Council, which emphasized the shared
responsibility among laity, religious, and clergy for the mission of the Church.
By Baptism, we are responsible for sharing in the mission of Christ. As Cardinal
Bernardin stated in his 1989 pastoral letter, "Although we sometimes speak
as if the Church were something outside of ourselves, we are the
Church in the world of today.

As a practical means of
implementing this shared responsibility, the focus of the Parish Pastoral
Council is the development of unity and nourishment of spiritual vision in St.
Kieran Parish. The PPC is not a board of directors or a decision making body,
but a consultative group. It is designed to address the goals of the parish as
set forth in the parish mission statement, the needs of parishioners, and the
mission of the universal Church. As a parish coordinating body, the PPC works
with the pastor, staff, and other parish leaders. It is responsible for
discerning the needs of the parish, promoting communication, linking ministries
and organizations, and handling crises.
